The new book by Sudipto Das, called “Jagadish Chandra Bose: The Reluctant Physicist”, was launched at a bookstore in the city. This book doesn’t just focus on Bose’s scientific work; it paints a lively picture of his life. The event had the author, Gautam Basu, a former professor at Bose Institute, Palash Baran Pal, a theoretical physicist, and Debanjan Chakrabarti, the director of the British Council East & Northeast India, who was the moderator.
Bose’s grandniece, Supriya Roy, was also a special guest at the launch. Sudipto Das shared what inspired him to write about Bose, emphasizing Bose’s role in the Bengal Renaissance. Bose believed in elevating Indian science alongside Western science, which was a revolutionary idea during a time when the British opposed Indians engaging in science.
Gautam Basu noted that while there are many biographies on Bose, Sudipto’s approach brings Bose to life in a different way. It’s the first well-researched biography, exploring not only Bose but also his contemporaries from the West. Palash Baran Pal appreciated the depth of research, mentioning that the book reads like a novel and expressing a desire for more scientific references.
