DC Studios announced in the month of October that Suicide Squad director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran would be taking over the studio, serving as co-chairmen and chief executive officers. James Gunn has now revealed the first project for the studio, a new Superman movie without Henry Cavill.
On Twitter, Gunn announced that he is working on a new Superman film and intends to cast a different actor in the lead role. Henry Cavill wrote on his Instagram to corroborate the news, “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Gunn said that the recasting was necessary since the script he’s working on will center on “an earlier period of Superman’s existence.” (But it’s not an origin narrative, he insisted.) Additionally, the filmmaker stated that he and Safran are “huge fans” of Cavill and that they intend to collaborate again in the future on another endeavor. The new Superman film’s director has not yet been revealed.
The announcement comes shortly after Cavill’s most recent Superman outing. In Black Adam’s end-credits cameo, as Superman meets with Dwayne Johnson’s antihero, the actor dons the well-known crimson cape. Cavill uploaded a happy video to Instagram announcing his return and informing fans that more information would be forthcoming after what appeared to be a cameo setting up plans for a future movie.
DC’s upcoming film schedule has been in upheaval recently due to rumors regarding how Gunn and Safran’s new position may effect their plans. “A DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about,” Gunn and Safran posted on Twitter. In early 2023, he said, he will provide additional information regarding DC’s impending timetable.
Gunn additionally showed reviews that he met with Batman actor Ben Affleck to speak about his destiny with the studio, too. “He desires to direct & we need him to direct; we simply need to discover the proper project,” Gunn wrote. Affleck will subsequently reprise his position as Batman in The Flash, starring Ezra Miller.
Earlier this week, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins additionally unfolded approximately her destiny at DC. After the information broke that DC could now no longer be shifting ahead on a Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman 3, the filmmaker took to social media to disclaim reviews that she walked far from the film. In a statement, she wrote that “there has been not anything I ought to do to transport whatever ahead.”
